Adamawa teachers protest salary delay

Primary school teachers in Adamawa State on Monday staged a protest over delay in the payment of their salaries, non-payment of leave grant and non-implementation of their new salary structure.

The teachers took to the streets with placards, reading “Please give us our TSS and our bailout”; “We are tired of delay in payment of salaries”; “No leave grant for 3 years”; “No yearly increment for 18 years,” among many others.

The teachers started the protest from the state basic education office and terminated it at the government house, where they tabled their grievances before the Secretary to the State Government and Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The aggrieved teachers, led by Edwin Omoraka, told the government delegation that they were forced to stage the protest to demand the payment of their salary arrears.

He said other demands include “non-payment of yearly increment and upgrading for 15 years, non payment of leave grant for 3 years, delay in payment of salaries, non payment of bailout funds to teachers, and non-promotion of teachers for 10 years”.

Responding, the SSG expressed displeasure that the welfare of the teachers was not catered for.

He said as a teacher himself, he was saddened by the development, urging the teachers to exercise patience as state government would look into their complaints.

He also said the chairman of the state universal basic education board would be summoned by government to answer questions.
