Attack on Schools: Nigerian teachers seek stakeholders’ forum

NUT says Nigeria’s security challenges currently threatens Education For All project.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, on Monday urged the Federal Government to convene a stakeholders’ forum to seek ways of meeting the Education For All, EFA, target of December 2015, especially in the wake of insurgency.

The Chairman of the NUT, Lagos Wing, Segun Raheem, said in Lagos that insecurity was threatening Nigeria’s achievement of the target.

“Government should call all stakeholders in the education sector to a meeting devoid of politics and sentiments.

“Stakeholders should put heads together to look for ways of encouraging parents and children of school age in the crisis zone to go to school,” Mr. Raheem said.

The chairman also called for implementation of the memorandum issued at the recent National Economic Summit held in Abuja.
He said the memorandum proposed that Nigeria should invest in teachers for its economy to grow.

He said the state of insecurity in the country, especially in the North-East, was a major challenge to the achievement of the target.

“The reality on ground is that parents are afraid to send their children to school in states such as Borno and Yobe, where school children are attacked.

“The continuation of such attacks on schools may lead to commencement of de-schooling in the country, which would totally defeat the UNESCO’s Education For All target by 2015.

“This act, of course, means that we are playing foul with our future, as EFA is the responsibility of all, and should be protected jealously,” he said.

The EFA target date was set by the UNESCO at a meeting in 1990. It was reaffirmed in 2000 at the World Education Forum held in Dakar.

The objective of the declaration is to make education available to all children of school age, irrespective of economic background.
