Nigerian should blame their state governors for the declining quality of education in Nigeria, says the Executive Secretary of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr Suleiman Dikko.

Speaking at a forum with Journalists in Abuja, Dikko said the Federal Government allocates N1billion matching grant to each state of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) annually for the development of basic education.

Dikko explained that state governments are required to pay a counterpart fund of N1 billion to be able to access the grant.

He said the state government should thus be blame to for the decline in quality, because they failed to access the grant, leading to poor performance of students in examinations.

The UBEC boss noted that the Commission is only an intervention agency of the federal government and is not responsible for ensuring that quality and standards are maintained in primary and secondary schools.

Recently, the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Obong Obong, criticized governors for failing to “access the available funds lying idle at the UBE Commission and use same to address the problems in their primary schools.”

Obong revealed that the governors’ are responsible for the dwindling quality of education in Nigeria.
