Aston Villa’s Jordan Ayew beat Chelsea’s John Mikel Obi to the African Player of the Month of January in the English Premier League accolade.
The Ghanaian also beat off competition from Cheikhou Kouyate of Senegal and West Ham to win his maiden award.
The monthly award is given out by New African Soccer and its director Tunde Adelakun said the attacker put in a good shift with a lot of ability and desire to lead his team to one win, two draws and one loss in January.

“Jordan Ayew has really put in a good shift in the games that Aston Villa played in the month of January, and although they are really struggling to get results as a club, one cannot but notice and appreciate the desire and ability shown by the youngster in the course of the month,” the director said.
Jordan Ayew played in three of the four matches Villa played in January including a man-of-the-match performance at West Brom.
The attacker picked up a red card in a 2-0 loss to West Ham in early Febraury and will therefore miss his club’s next three games.
