Nigeria’s only surviving team in continental tournament this season, Warri Wolves, have a mountain to climb to make the group phase of the CAF Confederation Cup as they were walloped 3-0 in their first leg playoff tie against Congolese club, AC Leopards.
The Nigerian flag bearers have before now enjoyed a good run of form in their away games and it was surprising for many to see them crashing to the 3-0 defeat which means they must also beat their opponents by at least same margin to stand a chance of moving on to the group stage.
Mahamane Cisse’s opened the scoring jamboree at the seventh minute after beating Wolves Goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi.
AC Leopard forward, Ginelord Ndey, scored the second goal at the 28th minute, while Lakolo Pastone netted the third goal just outside the box at the 75th minute.
If Warri Wolves fail to overturn the goals deficit in the return leg, their dream of making it to the group stage in the Confederations Cup for the first time will be up in flames.
Sadly also, no Nigerian team has won the Confederation Cup in its present format and hopes of Wolves breaking the jinx is now been threatened.
