Dodo Cheney, the first woman to win the tournament widely known as the Australian Open is dead, she died on Sunday at her home in Escondido, California, after a brief illness.

The 1994 International Tennis Hall of Fame inductee was one of the best in her time, ranking in the top ten during the 1930’s and 1940’s.

According to US Tennis Association records, she won 400 USTA national titles across various age groups.

In addition to her 1938 singles titles, she was reputable for reaching the semi-finals of other three Grand Slams titles.
