Ezeugo rules out Nigeria from AFCON 2017

Former Nigerian international, Emeka Ezeugo, has declared that the Super Eagles should forget their qualification for Gabon 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria are in Group G of the qualifying series alongside Egypt, Tanzania and Chad with the Pharaohs of Egypt leading the group with six points, while Eagles are having four points. Tanzania and Chad are having one and zero point respectively.

Ezeugo doubts Eagles’ capacity to qualify in the group where only one team will take the group’s slot to the Nations Cup.

According to the former Eagles’ midfielder, who had played professionally in five continents most famously for Connecticut Wolves (A-League in United States), East Bengal, Kolkata, India, Peru and Dhaka Mohammedan during a successful 15-year playing career, Nigeria’s Super Eagles can only qualify for the 2017 AFCON if the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) could disqualify Egypt from the qualifying series.

This, according to Ezeugo, would give Sunday Oliseh-led team a blank cheque to pick the group’s sole ticket ahead of other two teams.

Because this assumption cannot happen, Ezeugo believes that with the current form of Egypt’s Pharaohs, and the dwindling fortunes of the Super Eagles, Nigeria will find it hard to go to the African championship.

Ezeugo said that Egypt remain a stumbling block to Nigeria’s qualification except a miracle happens.

Meanwhile, another ex-Eagles’ defender, Sam Sodje says hope is not lost if Nigeria can take the remaining group matches of the qualifying series very seriously.

Though Nigeria are not considered favourites over the two legged matches against Egypt in March this year, Sodje believes that with Nigerians’ support, Oliseh and his current crop of players could scale the hurdles to the 2017 AFCON.
