For failing to provide toilet facilities in their houses about 60 landlords in the capital city have been prosecuted by Ebonyi state government.
This disclosure was made by the state commissioner for environment, Ogodo Ali Nome, while fielding questions from reporters saying that some of the affected landlords had paid fine for the offence and those who could not immediately pay their fine were remanded at the Abakaliki prison.

The commissioner attributed the spreading of diseases in the city as a result of failure to provide toilets by landlords and warned that anyone who erects building in the state without the facility would be sanctioned in accordance with the state’s environmental law.
Nome also disclosed that about 138 people were prosecuted for defecating in open places.
He further added that despite several warnings by the government for landlords to provide toilet, the erring house owners decided to do otherwise prompting the ministry to take this drastic step.

The government explained that the activities of such landlords were responsible for the outbreak of cholera, diarrhea and polluted environment within the capital city and warned that there would not be any sacred cow in the quest to sanitize the state.
