Grandson steps into Baba Legba’s music shoes, releases first album

The grandson of late Apala musician, Yusuf Olatunji, popularly known as Baba Legba, has re-awakened the music spirit of his grandfather 37 years after his demise.

The grandson, Abideen Yusuf-Olatunji, on Sunday launched his maiden album, which was the replica of his grandfather’s work, at an event held at the Alake Palace, Abeokuta.

The event attracted hundreds of the Sakara music lovers across the South-West region of the country, with Lekan Alabi leading members of the late Yusuf Olatunji Foundation to the event.

The album, titled “Oke Agba Nfe Suru”, has some of its tracks celebrating former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Alake of Egbaland, Adedotun Gbadebo, and his traditional ruler colleagues across the country.

Other themes captured in the album are the essence of peace and unity in the country as it featured the Boko Haram crisis, social vices and democracy.

The prodigy, who plays his father’s violin, is promoted by Fatilah Global Entertainment, while the record was released under the label of Audiomila Studio.

Speaking at the event, the chairman of Yusuf Olatunji Foundation, Lekan Alabi, said the discovery of the music maestro would continue to put the name of the family in the world map of music.

Mr. Alabi, 65, said it was the late Yusuf Olatunji who played at his naming ceremony.

He said his love for Sakara Music genre of late Yusuf Olatunji prompted him to stand by his grandson, who, he said, had stepped into his musical shoe.

He said the music of the deceased, which was loaded with education, morals and entertainment, remains evergreen.

Mr. Alabi said Abideen’s grandfather produced over 300 albums in his lifetime.

Speaking with PREMIUM TIMES after the event, the wizkid said he was happy to inherit the musical trademark and vital instrument of his grandfather.
