How Daura Motel, The Only Hotel In Buhari’s Town Has Been Left To Rot

The emergence of Muhammadu Buhari as president of Nigeria has thrust the ancient city of Daura into limelight as tourists and business people are suddenly flooding the city. Unfortunately, hostel hospitality is in a deplorable state in the town.

According to Daily Trust, the only hotel in the town is Daura motel which is expected to cater for the accommodation of the influx of people coming into the town. The hotel however is unbefitting of the prestige of being the main hotel in the town where the president comes from.

According to report, the hotel which is owned by the state government began as a catering guest house with 12 rooms that served the then government officials but at the moment; there are 52 rooms with prices ranging from N4, 000 to N12, 000 per night.

The hotel is now in a deplorable condition with the compound overgrown with weed. The roads are said to be in poor condition while the building is in a ramshackle state. Mosquitoes and reptiles override the place.

Water is hard to get in the hotel as the only available bore hole does not work. Power supply is also not frequent. Daily Trust reports that visitors spend the most part of the night without power as it is only available from 8pm to 11pm.

A worker said: “At 11 pm, when the light goes off, our nightmares begin as customers demand for power which we can’t supply.”

He added that they refill reservoirs with water in the morning for visitors who must make do with the services available.

Government officials who accompany the president to his home town stay in the hotel or stay with their friends in the city. Some choose to stay in better hotels in neighbouring Kano or Katsina.

Daily Trust reports that the Katsina state government however has planned to renovate the hotel to fit modern standard.

A letter written by Governor Aminu Masari to the state assembly revealed plans to spend N245 million to repair the hotel. He said this will help to improve the state’s internally generated revenue.
