The reports reveal that the body parts which had been discovered belonged to prisoners as well as visitors at the La Modelo jail in the capital city of Bogota.
The La Modelo jail is said to be one of the biggest penitentiaries in the country, housing a population of 11,000 drug traffickers, Marxist rebels and paramilitaries, and is renowned for its level of violence.
Daily Mail reports that the dismembered parts found in the sewage system are believed to be victims of a string of attacks which had occurred between 1999 and 2001.
A statement released by the authorities revealed thus:
“The number of victims is unknown, but we know it’s over 100 and could be considerably higher.
“Remains of prisoners, visitors and others were thrown in the drainage system.”
