INEC reschedules distribution of PVCs in Niger

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has shifted the issuance of the Permanent Voters’ Card, PVC, in Niger State from Friday, December 12 to Friday, December 19.

In a press statement, the chief press secretary to the state governor, Israel Ebije, confirmed the new date.

He also confirmed the cancellation of Friday as work-free day for Niger state civil servants.

The statement urged all registered voters in the state not to be deterred by the postponement but to ensure that they came out to receive their PVCs.

Mr. Ebije said they should look at the postponement from the positive side, adding that it had indeed raised awareness for eligible voters to be more than prepared for the exercise.

He said the PVC collection centres would be strategically designated across the state, asking the people to turn out in their numbers to avoid asking for extension of time if it can be avoided.

He said the PVCs would not only make electorates eligible to vote in the 2015 but would be useful also in subsequent elections after 2015.

Mr. Ebije urged people who would be engaged in the exercise to conduct themselves peacefully, stressing that anybody who could not find his or her PVC should forward genuine complaint to INEC rather than resort to acts capable of undermining the peace in the state.

Mr. Ebije thanked all the delegates, party officials, aspirants and security agencies in the just concluded Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, primaries for the peaceful exercise urging them to continue in that direction to make the 2015 general election violence free and a reflection of the peoples wish.
