Irish ambassador commends Adamawa, American University peace initiative

The Irish Ambassador to Nigeria, Sean Hoy, has said the peace initiative of the American University of Nigeria, AUN, and the Adamawa Peace Initiative, API, is commendable programme.

Mr. Hoy said it has been able to reduce the number of persons in the Internally Displaced Persons camps.

The Ambassador who was in Adamawa state to commiserate with the internally displaced people and to see for himself and appreciate the problems the people are facing so as to be able to give necessary advise based on his experience on similar situation in other countries.

Mr. Hoy who was at the AUN met with members of the Adamawa Peace Initiative over ways to sustain the peace initiative that brought relief to thousands of displaced persons in the state.

He said “it be of great benefit if the AUN and API works closely with the state government so as to be able to reach people who are the real displaced persons”.

Mr. Hoy said “maintaining a well-organized information system will help in keeping records of the IDPs”.

The Irish envoy said it is impossible for Ireland to provide relief to the IDPs since it has no collaborating programme in Nigeria. He said “But I will take my experience here back to my colleagues and we’ll see what we can do”.

Last week, AUN-API had a peace conference in Yola to deliberate on ways peace can be restored to the region.

Relief materials worth millions of naira were donated to over 7,000 households and over 40,000 people in the last one year.

Speaking earlier, AUN’s President, Maggi Ensign said,” The AUN-API is not only concerned about providing relief materials to the displaced person but also to ensure that they are integrated back into the society”.
