Katsina LG polls record high security presence, low voters’ turnout

A high presence of security men with a low voters’ turnout was recorded during the Saturday’s Local Government Elections in the southern part of Katsina State.

The distribution of election materials was conducted early and ad-hoc workers reported to their respective stations early, especially in Funtua, Faskari, Sabuwa, Danduma, Danja, Bakori, Malumfashi, Kafur, Kankara, Musawa and Matazu local government areas.

The security personnel which comprised the police, civil defence, immigration and prison officers, were stationed at the polling units to ensure protection of lives and property.

Movement was restricted within the township streets while motorists plying federal roads such as Funtua to Kano; Funtua to Zamfara were not allowed passage by the police.

Voting started at 9a.m. after accreditation of voters while collation of results began at about 12 noon.

There was, however, voter apathy in Funtua as the number of security men superseded the voters in Unguwar Musa, Nassarawa and Unguwar Ibrahim polling units.

The same scenario was witnessed in Yarmalamai and Sabonlayin Galadima wards in Faskari Local Government

The Deputy Governor of the state, Abdullahi Garba, who voted at Faskari Model Primary School unit 005, commended the state electoral commission and voters that turned out.

Mr. Garba told journalists that the Katsina State Independent Electoral Commission had demonstrated objectivity in ensuring compliance with electoral laws and urged voters to use their rights wisely.

He advised candidates that would emerge to live up to the expectations of the people by providing quality leadership to complement the current transformation agenda of the federal and Katsina State governments.

The electoral officers of Funtua and Faskari local governments, Shehu Funtua and Bello Maje, respectively, said that all guidelines on distribution, screening and voting had been complied with.

Some voters at the polling units in Malumfashi, Musawa and Funtua: Usman Alaliya, Shafi’u Mailambu and Karime Maiwaina, said the conduct of the elections was transparent.

They urged stakeholders to always ensure the peaceful conduct of elections.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, fielded candidates at all the local government areas, while the Peoples Progressives Alliance, PPA, fielded candidates in Faskari and Bakori local government areas.

The All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA,fielded candidates in Kankara Local Government Area while the APC boycotted the poll and challenged the exercise at a High Court.
