Manu Garba returns as Coach of Golden Eaglets

The Nigeria Football Federation has officially named erstwhile Flying Eagles Coach, Manu Garba, as the “new” handler of the Nigeria U-17 team, the Golden Eaglets.

The development means Coach Garba is swapping position with his former assistant Emmanuel Amuneke who was Wednesday handed a new role as the Flying Eagles Head Coach.

In a statement on its official website, the NFF also announced that Coach Garba will be assisted by Atuni Ali and Ernest Teigpanyo.

The NFF gave returnee Eaglets Coach the mandate to repeat his World Cup –winning feat of 2013 at the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup in India.

Soft–spoken Garba, who was elevated to the U-20 team after the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup triumph, led the Flying Eagles to lift the African title in Senegal last year, but his boys failed to progress beyond the Round of 16 at the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

Before now, Coach Garba was quoted as rejecting his supposed demotion.

But the gaffer said he was opened to coaching any team as deemed fit by the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation.

The first real task for the Eaglets Coach and his crew is to see Nigeria through the qualification series for the 2017 African U-17 Championship, which will be hosted by Madagascar. The qualifiers start in few months’ time.

Meanwhile, the NFF also confirmed Bala Nikyu as Head Coach of the U-17 girls team, Flamingos.

He will be assisted by Queen Gwendolyn, with Lateef Yusuf serving as goalkeeper trainer.

Flamingos have already qualified for the final round of the African qualification series for the 2016 FIFA U-17 World Cup, which will hold in Jordan later in the year. They will play South Africa over two legs in March for a spot in Jordan.
