My reported defection to PDP a rumour — Gov. Mimiko

The governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko on Wednesday described his reported plan to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as “a rumour.”

“I don’t want to react to that because it is a mere rumour,” he told journalists after the National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting of the Labour Party, LP, in Abuja.

The governor however said he would back the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan during the 2015 presidential poll if the president decides to run.

Mr. Mimiko, who is currently the vice chairman of the Jonah Jang faction of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, was reported two weeks ago to have concluded plans to decamp to the PDP.

The governor was a member of the Alliance for Democracy, AD, and had served as Health Commissioner in the administration of late Governor Adebayo Adefarati between 1999 and 2003.

He however defected to the PDP and served as the Secretary to the Ondo State Government in the administration of late Olusegun Agagu. He was later appointed the Minister of Housing.

He however resigned his ministerial position and defected to the LP to contest the governorship election in 2007. The governor was re-elected in 2012.

Declaring the NEC meeting open earlier, the National Chairman, Dan Nwanyanwu, debunked reports that Mr. Mimiko was planning to leave the party.

He said the party was not aware of the move and that the governor would not have attended the meeting if he had harboured such a plan.

“You have seen him (Mimiko) here. As I’m talking to you, he is still a bonafide member of the Labour Party,” he said.

“We don’t have to base everything on speculation. You can see that he is here and we have discussed everything concerning the Labour Party together. He is here live and direct.”

Mr. Nwanyanwu, who said he would step down as national chairman, stated that the party’s national convention would hold on October 4.
