There has been controversies surrounding the emergence of Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
A report by the Tribune newspaper today, February 18, stated that the PDP may lose about 20 senators and 50 members of the house of representatives if Alhaji Sheriff stayed on as the party’s chairman.
To this effect, Naij.com spoke to some senators who are members of the party to share their views on the former governor’s new status.
Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe representing Abia south senatorial district who clearly said he was speaking on his personal views said he does not approve of Sheriff’s emergence.

He further said that this is a period the PDP is supposed to be a revamping, instead of having a controversial leader as the head of its affairs.
“I cant speak for others but there is controversy concerning Sheriff as the National chairman. For me, i say that we dont accept Sherrif. This is the tie where PDP as a party ought to reposition itself.
“The problem is that you cannot reposition yourself when what you do is to attract more controversy to your position.
“PDP would have done better for itself to find somebody who is non controversial and someone who does not have this type of moral burden of the person they chose now. Personally, i do not accept such a person,” he said.
Senator Sunny Ogbuoji who is also a member of the PDP representing Ebonyi south senatorial district said the matter has not been discussed in the party.

When asked about the authenticity of the story, he said:“Its the imagination of the journalist. How can they be telling us what they will do. We have not discussed it yet.”
Naij.com recalls that on Tuesday, February 16, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) confirmed the appointment of Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, a former governor of Borno State, as the new chairman of the party.
Sheriff who took over from Prince Uche Secondus, said the new PDP chairman promises to replace the ruling All Progressive Congress in 2019.
