Nigerian electricity commission issues licenses for embedded power generation

The embedded power generation license was handed to Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, on Wednesday, issued an operational license to the Bauchi State Government for an embedded electricity generation in the state.

The license was presented to the state Governor, Isa Yuguda, during a formal presentation ceremony following the approval of the application submitted to the Commission by the Yankari Power Company Limited more than two years ago.

The Chairman/CEO of NERC, Sam Amadi, noted the achievement of the Bauchi State government through the power company, stating that embedded generation was the immediate future of the country’s electricity industry.

Embedded electricity generation is the situation where the generator providing power is directly connected to the distribution networks consisting smaller or modular generators that use a variety of technologies, including solar, wind, biomass, diesel, fuel oils, low pour fuel oil, LPFO, high pour, high pour fuel oil, HPFO, crude oil, small hydro.

Mr. Amadi said that the Embedded Generation would also be a useful means of dedicating power to a particular state and local government, eligible customers and others.

He said NERC was not exempting anybody, as all are qualified to be beneficiaries, saying embedded generation is a project that should be emulated and executed by others.

Mr. Amadi presented the project as a model for other state governors, particularly as it concerned the certification of all environmental issues on the project.

The license certificate was officially signed for by the Managing Director of the company, Yankari Power Company, Mohammed Ajiya, before handing over to the Bauchi State Governor, who urged other states to adopt embedded power generation and invest in power infrastructure for the development of the people.

He commended NERC’s strategy as the best that has happened so far to Nigeria, saying all stakeholders must support the federal government in the effort to generate sufficient power for all Nigerians in the shortest time.

Mr. Yuguda said he is delighted to preside over the first state that has adopted embedded generation strategy for electricity generation and urged NERC to sustain its “professionalism” for the provision of stable and reliable power supply in the country.
