Police humiliate students, lecturers protesting over ASUP, COEASU strike

Protesting lecturers and students of the nations polytechnics and colleges of education were yesterday humiliated by the Nigerian police as they were fired with teargas and sprayed water gun.

The students and lecturers who staged the protest at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja, were scattered by police officers who fired tear-gas at the protesters who vowed not to leave the venue. Read more….

Atiku eulogizes the late Amaka Igwe

Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar has expressed his shock over the death of ace producer/director Amaka Igwe.

Alhaji Abubakar said  Igwe who died in Enugu on April 28 was a jewel of the movie industry.

Atiku, a chieftain of APC, made the assertion in a statement issued by his media Officer, Mr Paul Ibe, in Abuja on Tuesday. Read more….

Nigeria’s senate president, David Mark, has made a strong case for an urgent military action, beyond the state of emergency in place at the moment, to end the war against Boko Haram.

Chibok Schoolgirls: Women to hold massive Abuja protest Wednesday

Some women in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, under the banner of “Women for Peace and Justice”, will stage a peaceful protest to demand the release of the remaining 230 female students kidnapped in their hostel in Chibok, Borno State.

About 273 girls, students of the Government Secondary School, GGSC, are believed to have been abducted by members of the Boko Haram on April 14.

Forty-three of the girls have been found and reunited with their family, with many of that number escaping from their abductors. Read more….

48 Nigerian prisoners pass General Certificate Examination (GCE)

Forty-eight prisoners who are awaiting trial at the Ikoyi Prisons have passed the November/December 2013 General Certificate of Examination (GCE).

Deputy Controller of Prisons, Mr. Emmanuel Bamidele, who made the disclosure on Monday while receiving members of the Ikeja Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), said 54 other inmates also wrote the examination but were unsuccessful. Read more….

Abduction of 234 girls a declaration of war – Senate

The Senate on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to seek the assistance of the United Nations and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to urgently rescue 234 girls abducted by the Boko Haram insurgents in Chibok, Borno State.

The Senate also unanimously resolved to confer with President Goodluck Jonathan to seek ways of curtailing the spread of insurgency in the country.

These resolutions followed a motion entitled: “Abduction of School girls in Chibok, Borno State,” sponsored by Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba and 107 other Senators. Read more….

Ebonyi assembly suspends deputy speaker, 2 others over insubordination

The Ebonyi State House of Assembly at its plenary some few hours ago suspended the Deputy Speaker and member Representing Afikpo South East, Hon Blaise Orji and two other members.

They are the member Representing Afipko South West Constituency, Hon Eni Uduma Chima and the member representing, Ohaukwu North State constituency, Hon Frank Onwe. Read more….
